Part B – Medical

What Is Medicare Part B? | Simple Guide to Coverage and Costs

Understanding Medicare Part B

Medicare Part B is medical insurance that covers essential services such as doctor visits and outpatient care.  It focuses on two main areas of coverage:

  • Medically Necessary Services: Care needed to diagnose or treat medical conditions that meet accepted standards of medical practice.
  • Preventive Services: Healthcare designed to prevent illness or detect conditions early, like flu shots and routine screenings.

Knowing what Medicare Part B includes—and what it doesn’t — can help you better manage your healthcare needs and costs.

What Medicare Part B Covers

Part B covers a broad range of healthcare services, including:

  • Doctor Visits and Specialists
  • Outpatient Care: Treatments or procedures conducted without admission to a hospital, like clinic-based services.
  • Diagnostic Tests and Lab Work: Blood tests, screenings, X-rays, and imaging tests.
  • Preventive Care: Flu shots, cancer screenings, and diabetes testing.
  • Durable Medical Equipment (DME) such as wheelchairs, walkers, and blood sugar monitors.
  • Mental Health Services including counseling and therapy.
  • Rehabilitation Services like physical and occupational therapy.

Additional Covered Services

Here are more services that Medicare Part B includes:

  • Ambulatory surgical center services
  • Speech-language pathology
  • Some home healthcare services

What Medicare Part B Does Not Cover

While Medicare Part B provides broad coverage, it excludes certain services, including:

  • Most prescription drugs
  • Vision care (like glasses and exams), routine dental care, and dentures
  • Cosmetic surgery
  • Hearing aids and related exams
  • Long-term care

If you need these services, you may need additional insurance, such as Medicare Advantage (Part C) or Medicare Part D for prescription drugs.

Costs Associated with Medicare Part B

  • Premiums and Deductibles
Medicare Part B requires a monthly premium, usually set at a standard rate by the government.  However, higher-income earners may need to pay an additional Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount (IRMAA).  You’ll also pay an annual deductible before Medicare starts covering your costs.
  • Coinsurance
Once your deductible is met, you’ll typically pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount for most services, with Medicare covering the remaining 80%.
  • Out-of-Pocket Costs
Services not covered by Medicare Part B—like routine vision or dental care—will need to be paid out-of-pocket unless covered by supplemental insurance.

Enrollment in Medicare Part B

Your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) starts three months before your 65th birthday and ends three months after. If you don’t enroll during this time and don’t qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP), late enrollment may result in a penalty.

Those already receiving Social Security benefits are automatically enrolled, but others may need to sign up through the Social Security office.

Making Medicare Part B Work for You

Medicare Part B is a critical part of ensuring your healthcare needs are met, especially as you age or manage specific conditions.  Take time to review your needs and consider adding supplemental insurance like Medigap or Medicare Advantage for broader coverage options.

By understanding what Part B includes, the costs to expect, and how to access coverage, you’ll feel more equipped to manage your healthcare confidently.  Still have questions?  Your trusted independent Medicare consultant can work with you to explore your options.  Let’s talk!
